EP elects committee Chairs

On 7 July 2014, the European Parliament's permanent committees all elected their new Chairs for the next 2.5 years. Read on to get to know some the Chairs of the committees most relevant to our work.

Committee on Culture and Eduation (CULT)
Silvia Costa (S&D, Italy)

Ms Costa has been a Member of the European Parliament since the previous elections in 2009. She was already a member of the CULT Committee during the previous legislature, most noticeably serving as rapporteur for the Creative Europe Programme.

Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL)
Thomas Händel (GUE-NGL, Germany)

Mr Händel has been a Member of the European Parliament since the previous elections in 2009. He was already a member of the EMPL Committee during the previous legislature, working on a wide array of socio-economic issues.

Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE)
Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland)

After a distinguished career in Polish national politics, including serving as Prime Minister for four years, Professor Buzek became a Member of the European Parliament in 2004, serving as its President from 2009 to 2012.

Committee on Regional Development (REGI)
Iskra Mihaylova (ALDE, Bulgaria)

Ms Mihaylova (Bulgarian: Искра Михайлова), who holds a Master's degree in Library and Information Technology, was newly elected to the EP in 2014. She previously served as Minister of Environment and as Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works in Bulgaria.
